In June, German automaker Volkswagen introduced a new model known as the 2015 California camper. This spacious van is desirable for casual camping enthusiasts as well as drivers who want to live in a vehicle while they travel from one destination to the next.

Features
The VW California offers two chairs and a table that hides in its side door when not in use. It also boasts a popup roof; this feature provides extra sleeping space while people go camping. A sunshade helps owners avoid bright sunlight.

Extras
Additional amenities vary depending on the trim level and options that a buyer selects. A fully equipped camper supplies swiveling driver and passenger seats, a refrigerator, a sink, extra heating equipment and a stove with two burners. This stove runs on natural gas.

Drivetrain
The standard 2015 California offers manual shifting and two-wheel drive. Unlike some Volkswagens of the past, the van has an engine that powers its front rather than rear wheels. Motorists have the option to upgrade to four-wheel drive or an automatic gearbox.

Engine
This camper comes with a four-cylinder, two-liter turbo engine unit that runs on diesel fuel. Different versions of this motor generate between 83 and 201 hp. The automaker plans to introduce a gas-powered option by 2016.

Trim
Volkswagen has named the California’s trim levels after different things that can be found at the shore. They include Ocean, Beach and Coast. The Beach provides extra seating space but the Coast has more kitchen appliances. For a power popup roof and better climate control, drivers can choose the Ocean.

History
The first California was introduced by VW in the late 1980s. It provided some of the same features as the Westifalia campers that this automaker started to sell during the 1960s, such as the popup roof. This year’s model is based on the sixth generation of the Transporter van, which was also released in recent months.

To sum it up, the 2015 California camper gives motorists everything they need to avoid pricey motel rooms and uncomfortable tents. It is currently only available in Germany, the home country of Volkswagen. The California Camper may not be available in the US yet, but you can find the full range of available US Volkswagen models at Patrick WV in Auburn, MA, Take one out for a test drive today and experience the VW reputation firsthand.
